So I recently found a problem with choosing which novels I'm going to read, which is that I'm biased towards not reading Japanese novels. So I looked into what made me dissatisfied with Japanese novels, and that was the titles themselves. If you look generally at Japanese novels, it looks like over 90% of them have a sentence for their title, not just two or three words. I have heard countless times to not "judge a book by its cover" but when you have over 500 different novels that you can read, if you don't judge a book by its cover, you would probably waste a lot of time. However, I have not given up on Japanese novels completely, because there are definitely good Japanese novels out there which are not just an op mc getting a new girl for his harem by the chapter (exaggeration). So I would like to request some help in recommendations for good Japanese novels.
Japanese novels that pass so far...
- Overlord
- The Girl Who Ate A Death God (only had 40 chapters so I started reading and it turned out ok)
- Katahane no Riku (Based on a game but is not the center point of the story)
- Dungeon Defense (not a Japanese novel but written in the style of one so I think it should count)
The following are some things I would prefer not to be in the recommended novels
Comedy - Some comedy is ok every once in a while but you get tired of it at some point
Systems - not a fan of things that force the mc to progress...would rather the mc progress willingly
Cheat skills - too common
gods (early on) - gods are peak existences (usually) so it kinda ruins the story if the mc has contact with gods like 3 chapters into the story
Obsession over boobs - obsession over them was funny when you see it for the first time but gets boring, repetitive and annoying over time.
(V)MMORPG or Game based world - real life is fun sometimes...
Op mc - too common so I got tired of it, however, if the mc is op but still faces serious challenges which require serious effort, it is ok
Transmigration/Reincarnation/Seconds Chance - In most Japanese novels whenever the mc gets a new life, he usually meet's a god...so if the mc gets a new life and is not at least confused for 2-3 chapters, it's a bit unrealistic
Harem - When I used to watch Anime, I developed a trauma for harems...the main reason is "tsurunde" characters, so if the harem in the novel does not include a "tsurunde" character, it might be ok
- If it is a harem, the mc must also be active in the harem...not just sitting there, and naively having 6 women fighting for him when he does not know what to do
- Kinda wish that the females do not fight or compete
- If harem, it is preferable for it to end in a polygamy...and not like anime where he does not chose a single girl...
your valuable suggestions are welcomed
Any help appreciated.
Thanks!
